Arcade Fire– Neon Bible
The artwork and design of Neon Bible is an homage to early cinema, motion studies (inspired by Eadweard Muybridge), and German Expressionism. Using high contrast black and white 16mm film, Maurice captured sci-fiesque images of a 1910 pipe organ (Saint-Zotique Church in Montréal), synchronized swimmers inspired by Busby Berkeley numbers (wearing custom made wetsuits emblazoned with X’s were created by Renata Morales), and a little girl reciting the Brothers Grimm fairy tale, "The Wolf and the Fox”.
Maurice designed a six-foot neon sign of a bible with a built in sequencer that allowed the pages to turn at various speeds. We shot the sign with cinematographer François Miron on 16mm color reversal film then scanned the frames to use in the packaging. These iconic images were used for LP, CD, and special packaging which included a lenticular CD cover and two flip books.
