Tracy Maurice is a Montréal based multidisciplinary artist, filmmaker and creative director. She works across platforms in art, design, film / video, sculpture, and installation. Her artistic practice navigates the interplay between analog and digital media, merging traditional craftsmanship with new technologies. Themes in her work explore temporality, the human condition, mythology, dream states, and our connection with nature.
Maurice became well-known through her work with Arcade Fire, where she played a key role as their creative director for the albums Funeral and Neon Bible, creating iconic album artwork, and directing stage design and video projects, including the acclaimed interactive music video Black Mirror. In 2017, she premiered the audiovisual project, Preservation at Lincoln Center (NY), and in 2020, she directed Lay Them All Down in collaboration with live artist Dana Michel, which premiered at the 11th Berlin Biennale for Contemporary Art (Berlin).
Drawing from an Art Historical background, she frequently references early cinema studies, tapping into the rich history of special effects, science, and magic. She often experiments with practical special effects to craft distinctive compositions, narratives, and movement.
Her work has been exhibited at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts (NY), Society for Arts and Technology (MTL), Grenfell Art Gallery (NL), Nuit Blanche (TO), HAM Helsinki Art Museum, Musée d'art contemporain de Montréal (Montréal) and ANTI – Contemporary Art Festival (Helsinki) in collaboration with live artist Dana Michel. Maurice has given talks at Berklee College of Music, Pennsylvania College of Art & Design, and HFBK University of Fine Arts Hamburg. She also taught filmmaking at the IDFA Film Academy Summer program for youth at the University of California, Berkeley. She has been an artist-in-residence at RU (New York) and SÍM Residency (Reykjavik).
